Why tilt controls still work in racing games
Tilt controls get dunked on constantly, and honestly a lot of that reputation is earned. But after spending a week with Neon Drift City I'm back on team tilt, at least for arcade racers.
The problem is almost always sensitivity. Games ship with it cranked too high, so the car twitches at the smallest wrist movement and you spend the whole race overcorrecting. Drop it way down and suddenly the car feels planted.
What good tilt racers understand is that the car should want to stay straight. You lean in to turn and it eases back on its own. Neon Drift City nails this, which is why drifting feels like a choice rather than an accident.
That said, options matter. The best games always offer touch buttons too, and nobody should be forced into tilt. But don't write it off until you've turned the dial down and given it a real shot on a quiet corner.
