Indie RPGs that respect your phone and your time
There's a myth that RPGs and phones don't mix because the genre demands huge chunks of time. A few indie studios have been quietly proving that wrong, and I want to talk about how they do it.
The best ones chop the adventure into clean chapters. Emberfall Saga is my current favourite for this. You can finish a meaningful story beat in fifteen minutes, which fits a lunch break without feeling like you stopped mid-thought.
Adjustable battle speed is the other big one. When combat lets you fast-forward the animations once you know the ropes, a thirty minute dungeon becomes a ten minute one. That single toggle changes whether a game survives on my phone.
My advice if you're hunting for one: ignore the screenshots and read how long other players say sessions actually take. A gorgeous RPG that needs an hour of uninterrupted focus is a desktop game pretending to be a phone game.
