When atmosphere beats action on a small screen

When atmosphere beats action on a small screen

The phone is a surprisingly good home for slow, atmospheric games. You're usually alone with it, often with headphones, and a quiet adventure can wrap around you in a way a loud one can't.

Hollow Lantern is the game that made me notice this. It's three hours of wandering a flooded town with a lantern, and the whole thing lives on sound and light. I played the second half late at night and the dripping water genuinely got under my skin.

Games like this win by trimming everything you don't need. No combat, no bloated inventory, just moving and looking. That focus means the atmosphere never gets interrupted by busywork.

The short length is a feature, not a flaw. A tight three hour story that sticks with you beats a fifty hour one you abandon after a weekend. More studios should be brave enough to make small things.
